Personal Digital Assistants (PDA units)
Gaia Resources now hires and sells both non-ruggedised and ruggedised PDA units.
Because we are independent of any manufacturers or software developers, we have the freedom to put together the best system for your needs. We have access to a wide range of PDA units, software and other tools that can be used in order to delvier the best solution for using these units in the field.
Any of our equipment can also be purchased outright. This is often a preferable solution if you want to use the units over a long period of time, and you have some understanding and experience in the use of mobile units and software.
We can provide you with units including:
- Trimble Juno units (non-ruggedised)
- TDS Nomad units (ruggedised)
- TDS Recon units (ruggedised)
Every different customer will have different needs. We recommend that you try the unit that you want to run in the field first through a hire term. Once you're satisfied with your unit, then we'll be able to give you a quotation on owning the unit outright.

When you hire units from us, we discuss with you first what it is that you want to do with the unit, and what sort of tools you want to use.
We then acquire the data you want (or you can provide it to us), install the required data and software onto the unit, provide you with training in how to use the unit and then we deliver the unit or ship it to your field location.
Currently, we have two complete ruggedised units available for hire, with all the equipment you see in the picture on the right.
These units are based on the TDS Recon PDA unit. This unit has proven to be the toughest unit we can use in the field.
In addition, we have handy "how to" sheets being constantly updated from our customer feedback that provides you with a reference in the field.
The hire kit contains:
- The main PDA unit, with a GPS and additional memory included within the extended casing
- A spare battery unit for long field days (which is hot-swappable)
- Mains power and car cigarette lighter chargers
- Connection cables for download via USB or Serial cables
- A holster case and additional stylus on a lanyard
- "How-to" sheets outlining how to undertake simple tasks, like changing the battery, charging the unit, and using the software
The units are currently leased out at a daily rate, plus hourly charges for the various preparation and download times.
