Celebrating GIS Day: a year of spatial insights at Gaia Resources

Happy GIS Day! Today we celebrate the power of all things geospatial and the people who use it to make better decisions for our environment, communities, and industries. It’s also a great moment to reflect on what our spatial team has accomplished over the past year.

Across Western Australia - from the Koolan Island coast to the South West - our team has been working behind the scenes to build reliable, accessible and fit-for-purpose geospatial solutions. Some of our key focus areas this year include:

Geospatial dashboards for Natural Resource Management

We have consolidated data, run workshops in Perth and regional WA, designed and delivered interactive dashboards that bring complex natural resource management datasets to life. These dashboards are helping NRM groups across WA gain clearer visibility into on-ground activities, environmental conditions, and long-term trends.

Data standards

Ensuring data quality remains a core part of our work. Our team is currently engaged in the review of biological and approval-related spatial datasets from a mining company, along with their data collection standards, to ensure consistency and compliance. As part of this project, we are also preparing templates following updated standards, to be populated with their existing data.

QGIS training across WA

We delivered QGIS training in Perth and throughout regional WA, including Koolan Island, supporting on-site teams with practical skills for mapping, analysis and daily operations.

We’re also preparing specialised QGIS training for DFES to support fire-season readiness and spatial decision-making during emergency response.

Enterprise GIS management

This year, our team managed and administered enterprise GIS environments, and created products within web maps and web applications for a range of clients (Westport and Woodside New Energy). We also offered in-house support to ensure smooth performance for spatial and non-spatial teams, reliable user access, and effective data governance.

Marine science data

Our team is supporting the WAMSI Westport Marine Science Program, designed to ensure the  environmental impact assessment for WA’s future container port is informed by independent science. With over 30 research projects across physical, biological, and social sciences, the program builds understanding of the unique coastal ecosystem. Gaia is supporting the program by auditing data from these projects, managing data and doing document and process control, ensuring the final outputs are accurate and reliable.

Biodiversity data & analysis

From species distribution modelling and fauna habitat assessment to vegetation mapping, we’ve supported biodiversity projects that contribute to shared analytics, environmental impact assessments, and ongoing ecological monitoring.

As we celebrate GIS Day, we’re proud of the value spatial thinking adds across sectors — supporting better decisions and stronger environmental outcomes.

Here’s to another year of mapping, analysing and making a difference!
